What is balayage?
Balayage is color painted onto the surface of the hair by hand, rather than saturated in foils. Your stylist places each piece of light where it falls naturally, so the color suits the way your hair moves.
Because there's no hard line where the color starts, it grows out softly. Most guests come in every 3 to 4 months instead of touching up roots every few weeks.
Balayage suits almost everyone. Brunette balayage gives dark hair soft, sun-grown dimension without going fully blonde, blonde balayage stays bright and lived-in, and a hand-painted money piece can frame your face. It works on brown, dark, and black hair, on curly hair (our stylists are DevaCurl certified), and on everything from a bob to long layers. Every balayage includes toning and a gloss.
What your appointment looks like
Consultation
We look at your hair's history and the photos you bring, talk through the brightness and tone you want, and agree on a plan and a price before anything begins.
Hand-painting
Your stylist paints each section freehand with Goldwell lightener and lets it process. Longer or denser hair takes more time and product; plan on 2 to 4 hours.
Gloss and style
Toning and a gloss are always included. We finish with a cut or style so you leave camera-ready, with a simple plan for keeping the color soft at home.

Balayage questions, answered
How much does balayage cost in Gainesville?
Full balayage at Ciao Bella starts at $295 with toning included. Longer or thicker hair can add to that, and your stylist confirms the final price at your consultation before starting.
Do you offer partial balayage?
We quote balayage as one full service with toning included. If you want a lighter touch — a face-frame, money piece, or partial balayage placement — your stylist scopes exactly that at your complimentary consultation, and services like Face Frame & Toning (from $120) or Partial Highlight & Toning (from $180) may fit better.
How long does a balayage appointment take?
Most appointments run two to four hours depending on your length, density, and how much lift you want.
Does balayage work on dark or brunette hair?
Yes. Balayage looks beautiful on dark and brunette hair, adding soft, sun-kissed dimension. Going from very dark or box-dyed hair to bright blonde can take more than one session, so we build a plan that protects your hair.
Can I get balayage on short hair or a bob?
Yes. Balayage suits most lengths, from bobs and lobs to long hair. On shorter cuts we place the painting to frame your face and add movement without looking stripey.
Can you do balayage on curly hair?
Yes. Our stylists are DevaCurl certified, so we paint and place your balayage to your curl pattern and finish it dry, giving dimension that reads beautifully on curls and waves.
What is the difference between balayage and highlights?
Highlights are woven into foils for an even, uniform lift. Balayage is painted freehand for softer, more natural placement with no hard grow-out line.
What is toning, and why is it included?
Toning is the finishing step that perfects your color after lightening. Lifting hair exposes the warm, brassy pigment underneath, so your stylist applies a toner or gloss to neutralize it and dial your blonde to the exact shade you want — cool, warm, or neutral. It's what turns a raw lift into a soft, beautiful, salon-finished color, which is why toning is built into every balayage here.
Should I get balayage or ombre?
Balayage is hand-painted throughout for a natural, lived-in blend. Ombre is a bolder, more defined shift from dark roots to light ends. In your consultation we show you which suits your hair and lifestyle.
How do I keep my balayage looking fresh, and how often should I come in?
Because it grows out softly, most guests come in every three to four months. Use a sulfate-free, color-safe shampoo, a purple shampoo if you are blonde, and a gloss or toner between visits to keep your tone from going brassy.
Is balayage damaging to my hair?
Done correctly it is gentle. We're a Goldwell color salon: every balayage starts with a consultation where your stylist reads your hair's condition and history, lightener is hand-placed only where it belongs, and we add a bond-building treatment when your hair needs support. Toning and aftercare guidance are part of the appointment, not extras.
